Meet Skull Chopper

Skull Chopper is a Roger Bourget creation, and is a 2006 Bourget Python 330 Chopper. Bourget is the name to know in custom choppers, and has been the inspiration of many custom bike builders, including many that you have seen on television. Roger Bourget is a veteran of Discovery Channel's Biker Build-off, and has developed a huge demand for his two-wheel works of art.

Bourget Bike Works holds multiple patents for their designs used in Skull Chopper, and rightfully at that. The chopper has many very unique engineering traits, and always gets fanatical reviews from other builders. Some cool things about the bike include oil-in-frame, eliminating an oil pan, and the use of a jack-shaft to keep the massive drive system on the left side. The engine is a Bourget-built 117 cubic inch S&S stroker with diamond cut cooling fins, and the gearbox is a Jim's Overdrive 6 speed. The drive includes an open primary with three huge belts leading back to the enormous Avon Venom 330/30R17 rear tire.

How I Met Skull Chopper

I came to meet Skull Chopper at the 2006 Bikes Blues and BBQ in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I went there with the hope that I would find a bike that grabbed my attention and forced me to bring it home. Skull Chopper did that for me. It was love at first sight, and I knew that I would be tormented by regret for a long time if I had not stepped up to make Skull Chopper my next bike.

The Ride

A lot of people ask about the ride. To put it mildly, a chopper as long as Skull Chopper is a lot to handle. It is not a good bike for a beginner. I have been riding since I was a pre-teen, and I still find that this bike takes a lot of concentration, and a lot of roadway to complete a turn. With the massive Avon Venom 330/30R17 rear tire, it takes some man-handling to straighten the road. Because of the incredible torque this bike generates at low RPM, it takes a very steady clutch and careful throttle control to make a street corner without using an extra lane. However, after a little practice, the bike becomes a huge joy to ride. In fact, it rides as good as it looks.

I will warn you that this kind of quality does not come easily. Skull Chopper raised my brow when it came time to put a pen to paper. By the time it was all said and done, and as the bike sits today, I have invested more money in Skull Chopper than my first house, my 2007 Corvette Z51, my 2007 Cadillac Escalade, or my 2005 Hummer H2s. Then, after I bought Skull Chopper, I found that my previous insurance carrier would not cover it because of its value. It took me two days of searching and calling to get it insured. Skull Chopper is covered by a total of three insurance policies, including two for liability and one for property coverage. I found out the hard way that most insurance companies will stop at $50,000 for a bike, and this one is a whole lot more bike than that. As I said, this is not a bike for the weak, but it is about the most fun a person can have with their clothes on.
